Being a retired dentist adds a symbolic connection to this very precious material. The sperm whale tooth carving has been designed with Clive in mind. The general concept that this taonga represents is bonds of love, union, and celebration of life. So, the name means essence of, or special nature of great family love. Whānau means family and arohanui means great love. It is also used for a physical object, individual, ecosystem or social group in which this essence is located. The word Mauri means life principle, life force, vital essence, special nature, a material symbol of a life principle, source of emotions - the essential quality and vitality of a being or entity. This sculpture has been named Mauri o whanau arohanui.

The Ngāi Tahu authenticity code is: P100JQ8Q. Only licensed individuals or businesses can use this mark, as only those following specific regulations can purchase the raw stone from Ngāi Tahu. Authentic New Zealand Pounamu displays a unique traceability code. This stone was sourced from the rivers of Tai Poutini ki te Raki, the northern region of the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island. Within this block of stone, the colours range from a warm brown or tan, through to light creamy greens, and a deep dark green as we get closer to the heart of the stone. Endless combinations of Pounamu types occur, and no two pieces are the same guaranteeing that your Pounamu is unique. It is the lightest green of the stone types with delicate translucency (when carved thinly). This raw stone of the carving is Kahurangi, the Māori word for ‘precious’ or ‘prized possession’. A beautiful place located in the South of New Zealand renowned for whale watching. The whale tooth was obtained through the Kaikōura Marae. Such materials are traditionally reserved as gifts of high status. More details on individual aspects of the carvings are provided further on. These interlink together and are mounted on a base of Putiputi pounamu. One carving is made from sperm whale tooth and the other is made from Kahurangi pounamu. The sculpture consists of two carvings sitting upon a base. It has been especially commissioned for you. This Taonga (treasure) is a one-off piece of wearable art.
